The recent uproar over an MMA fighter's beatdown of a tai chi practitioner is a virtual case study for Bruce Lee's emphasis on real world application of the fighting arts."Organized despair." That's the phrase Bruce Lee often used to characterize many of the prevailing practices within the martial arts world.
Bruce actually had an entire arsenal of these kinds of colorful criticisms, and he wasn't shy about using them: "the classical mess," "dryland swimming," "patternized robots." He employed these terms to argue against where he saw the martial arts going astray, and to illustrate his opinion of how many practitioners were merely engaged in choreographed routines, or as he put it, "artificial techniques … ritualistically practiced to simulate actual combat." . . . Everyone loves a good submission finish in an MMA fight. Grapplers, wrestlers, BJJ specialists, and sometimes even strikers turn to submissions as a means to end a fight. And out of all the submissions, nothing is more devastating than a choke.
Ask any MMA fighter or BJJ practitioner, and they’ll tell you that joint submissions, are much easier to resist than a choke. Unlike a joint submission, a choke challenges the neck strength of one’s opponent, testing him/her until he/she is forced to tap. Because of this possibility, a choke has more potential to end any fight as opposed to a joint submission.
